Madhuri Dixit
ruled the roost as Bollywood’s queen bee in the ‘90s and even during an era
dominated by larger-than-life heroes, she stood her own ground and played
strong women onscreen.
And with her
second innings in Bollywood, she has once again picked heroine-centric films.
Since her debut
film Abodh in 1984, Madhuri has remained a pivotal part of the Indian
entertainment industry and on her 50th birthday, here are the five films
where she played bad-ass women.
MRITYUDAND

The Prakash Jha
directorial, which released in 1997, starred Madhuri Dixit, Shabana Azmi and
Shilpa Shirodkar. The film was a commentary on social and gender injustice and
Madhuri played Ketki, a feisty woman who stands up against patriarchy. The film
was invited to the London Film Festival in 1997 and Madhuri received the Best
Actress award.
LAJJA

Lajja, the 2001
Hindi drama was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Madhuri played Janki, a theater
actress who becomes an unwed mother and then rescues another woman from the
clutches of domestic violence. The actress had received Filmfare award for best
supporting actress for the film.
AAJA NACHLE

Madhuri made her
comeback with Aaja Nachle in 2007, which again was a heroine-centric film. She
played a single mother who challenges societal norms to open a dance school in
a small town in India.
DEDH ISHQIYA

The black
comedy directed by Abhishek Chaubey starring Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi,
Naseeruddin Shah, and Huma Qureshi, released in 2014. , Madhuri signed on to
play Begum Para, a woman who is not afraid to use her feminine wiles to get her
way. Couple that with the onscreen chemistry between Madhuri and Huma, and here
was another mould-breaking performance.
GULAAB GANG

revolved around Madhuri’s character Rajjo who locks horns with a conniving and
shrewd politician, Sumitra Bagrecha (Juhi Chawla), who uses people.
